Our yearly fundraiser will be a Valentine’s themed Dance-a-thon, held on February 9, 2018. This year all funds being raised will go directly to support and enhance classroom learning opportunities.

Early Bird Draws – Tuesday, January 30

Any students who have already raised $10 for our fundraiser are eligible for our Early Bird Draws – prizes include restaurant gift cards, lunch with a teacher, Valentines chocolates, and other fun items. Students will bring home a draw ballot on Monday to be signed by a parent or guardian in order to enter the draw.

Prize Donations: If you can donate a prize for the student fundraising raffles please drop it off at the office. This could include gift cards, Rangers tickets, new toys or games, etc. Anything you can donate will be appreciated and will help make the fundraiser a success!

Cakes and Cupcakes: If you can donate a Valentine’s themed cake or some cupcakes, please let Marianne Pierson know ( so we can ensure we have enough space to display the items. Cakes/ cupcakes should be dropped off at the school on the morning of February 9th.

Finally – if you have a couple of hours you can donate during the day on February 9th to help out with glo bracelet sales, or raffles or helping the students with the dance please contact Kathleen Parker ( so we can coordinate the day.

This year Valentine’s day happens to be the same day as Ash Wednesday. We will be having our Ash Wednesday Mass here at the school this year.

While Ash Wednesday is not a day of Obligation in the Catholic Church, all Catholics over the age of 14 are expected to fast on this day. It is also the first day of Lent and many students and families do practice various forms of abstinence from sweets, junk food etc., during this time.

As a result, we will be ‘celebrating’ Valentine’s day on Feb 13th to respect the solemnity of Ash Wednesday. Individual teachers will communicate with students and families regarding how they may be celebrating the day. In connection with this – we will not be having a school wide Pancake breakfast on Shrove Tuesday this year. We look forward to returning to this tradition next year.

When we experience wintry weather throughout the year families often have many questions. Considering this we are informing the community of the policy that is followed when deciding to keep students indoors during winter. Students will remain inside when temperatures, including wind chill, are at or below minus 20°C. Otherwise all students will go outside for recesses and lunches. Students must dress for the weather and be prepared to be outside before school, during the two 15-minute recess and the 40-minute lunch break. Please consider sending a change of clothes for your son or daughter in case their clothes get wet during recesses.

Remember – Children who are too ill to go outside for recesses should be resting at home

As we head into the end of Term 1 and report card/communication of learning is coming home soon, I have been reflecting on ways parents can also be involved in helping students share their learning at home.

Have you ever heard your child say “nothing” when asked what he learned at school that day??  Me too.

Here are some precise questions to ask your child(ren) about their day.  These questions are deliberate prompts to assist all of us with engaging in our children’s learning:

  1. What did you learn in reading/math/science today?
  2. How did you do? How did it go?
  3. What did you do if you did not understand? What strategy did you use?
  4. How can you improve on your learning?
  5. What are you most proud of?
  6. I am so proud of you for …

Try some of these questions out during the next few weeks.

Report cards come home on February 15th.
